With tonight's dominant 69-48 victory over Louisville the Marquette Warriors moved to 20-9 on the season and 11-6 in BIG EAST play.
Darius Johnson-Odom turned in a career-high 22 points to lead the charge for Buzz Williams' crew. Maurice Acker finished with 15 points and super-sub Joseph Fulce chipped in with 11 points. Marquette held Louisville to a season-low 48 points on 37% shooting from the field. No Cardinal scored in double figures tonight. Marquette's effort was simply outstanding.
More later this week but hey -- this team is dancing. Great job, fellas.
If Tony Manero is not your cup of tea, how about the inimitable Brad Galli? The MUTV Sports reporter recaps the big win -- complete with the circa-1977 baby blue blazer of choice.
As amazing at Tony Manero was back in the day, I don't think he could move through a crowd like DJO. Wow.
Media Recaps
I believe you mean 20-10, not 20-0.
ReplyDeleteGreat win, it's an awesome feeling to be predicted to be a 12th BE finisher only to lock in 5th for tonight and make the tourney. WE ARE MARQUETTE!
Fulce for all-american. The guy is unstoppable!
ReplyDeleteLove seeing guards playing above the rim. The put back by DJO was awesome. Two games in a row that David has taken it to the rim with relative ease.
ReplyDeleteSomewhere up in heaven, Al McGuire has really got to be smiling over this year. This team "oozes" Al, more so than anything I've seen since Al left us in 1977.
ReplyDeleteThis team works like there's no tomorrow. They fear no one and they play old fashioned Marquette basketball -- they win! When they lose, they don't lose by much and never leave anything on the floor.
Yes the team is undersized and everyone this year thought they were overmatched. But what they lack in size, they make up in spirit and hard work.
This is the same kind of team Al fielded from 1966 through 1971. We're witnessing something special this year -- more so than just about anything we've seen since 1977 (no I did not forget about D-Wade and 2003, that's why it's just about anything).
Guys, we're proud of you and keep it up!
Great win, great coverage by you guys, great season, it was looking like it was going to be a season of frustration and it turned into a season of triumph...wow has this been an exciting run.
ReplyDeletehaven't had this much fun rooting for the Warriors since Doc sank the last-second half-court shot to beat ND in 1981.
ReplyDelete(maybe the 03 Kentucky game too)
I think we're on the verge of many years where this is the consistent level of play we can expect from Marquette. Great game. Hats of to Fulce - he could very well be a deciding factor for us tourny time (BE and NCAA). I'd sure love to see him get 10,11,12 points a game for the next 4 weeks.
ReplyDeleteIt looked to me as though after Fulce sank that first jumper the next time down the floor Lazar was looking to set him up to get more shots (which I think Fulce deserves). Good signs that he is progressing into a contributer at the perfect time.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great game that was! We certainly saw a lot of heart out of both Buzz Williams (loved his herky and his outfit) and the team last night. As far as I'm concerned, we could have lost the game and I would have been okay with it, because our offensive rebounding, our free throws and our CONFIDENCE overall have gotten so much better since the beginning of the season. That said, we deserved every point of that 21 point win! Bring on the Big Dance!
ReplyDeleteIt still amazes me how Lazar and Jimmy battle the bigs down in the paint. Can we get Buzz to write a book on how to guard 6-10 big guys with 6-6 guys?
