Derrick Wilson, a 6-foot-1 point guard out of the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, CT, committed to Buzz Williams and Marquette on Monday. Originally from Alaska, Wilson was also targeted by Georgia Tech and Big East rival Notre Dame.
He’s a 3-star recruit on Scout with a grade of 90 and is listed as the #28 point guard in the nation for the 2011 class. From every report, it appears that Wilson is a strong, athletic guard who can get in the lane and create for those around him. He's also given a lot of credit for being a great rebounder for his position.
Rosiak is in on the commit too, with more updates from him planned for later today. Stay tuned there.
Here are some more links/clips
- Prepstars.com has a short clip on Wilson
- Here is an article on him from this summer
- Examiner.com talked about Wilson two years ago
In the Prepstars video, it says Wilson is “a strong student at a great prep school, his academics offer another selling point for college programs.”
D-Wil (it'll catch on) will join an already strong backcourt and it’s hard to tell what his role will be on next year’s team, considering the guard situation is still a toss-up for the current 2010-’11 season. Although it’s early, he’ll be competing with the likes of Cadougan, Smith, DJO, and Vander for playing time come next season.
Derek Wilson joins Juan Anderson in the 2011 freshman class, which leaves one open scholarship for Buzz come next season. Oregon transfer Jamil Wilson will also gain eligbility in 2011 as a redshirt sophomore.
Welcome to Marquette, Derrick!

here's hoping Wilson's talent catches on and not that nickname.
